The Coming Storm

Is civilization teetering on the edge of cataclysm? Mike Oehler, a Boundary County resident with several decades of national and international recognition for developing, teaching and writing about underground structures and survival, believes it is. To help Boundary County residents prepare for this looming disaster he will give a lecture on “The Earth-Sheltered Solar Survival Greenhouse” Saturday, May 14th in the Boundary County Extension Office behind the court house at 1:30 p.m..

For those who wish, the lecture will be followed by a tour of Mike’s underground house, his earth sheltered (bermed) house, his survival house, his new earth-integrated Ridge House and his earth-sheltered solar greenhouse. There is no charge for any of this.

Oehler built his first underground house in Boundary County in 1971 for $50. He lived in it four years then tripled its size to 370 square feet and lived in that $500 house for an additional 31 years. He has several other earth sheltered structures on his land and has designed and built for clients in both the US and Canada.

HGTV has filmed his work as have television crews from the Netherlands, Greece and the BBC (twice.) Last year a seven person, German headquartered, international film crew representing five nations filmed him for the movie “The Kingdom of Survival” soon to be released. Noam Chomsky is also featured in the film.

Oehler has lectured at colleges in 28 states, Scotland, England, Belgium, Holland and Germany. His “The $50 & Up Underground House Book” and his award winning “The Earth-Sheltered Solar Greenhouse Book” sell well both in the States and internationally.
